Romeo and Juliet: Themes to Consider

2. The Uselessness of Violence-
Uselessness of violence is the act of violence in a setting or situation that is not needed. Harmful ways could have, and should have, been avoided in a case of uselessness of violence. The act of using violence is useless in many situations, within stories and even in our world today. In Romeo and Juliet, this theme definitely applies with supporting examples. The story itself is based off of a large conflict between two families. This conflict between the Capulets and the Montengues has formed grudges, which in the larger scheme has created extreme violence. For example, the lives of two men, Mercutio and Tybalt, were lost because of the violent ways of the two feuding families. Both deaths, both cases of extreme violence, were completely useless. They didn’t resolve anything, the acts were not noble. In the end, those violent acts benefited absolutely nobody, which is completely pointless.

4. The Strength of Young Love
It may be hard to recognize, but young love has a very strong impact on emotions and opinions. That is what this theme means, the strong impact of which young love has. In young relationships, there is a lot of innocence, confusion but people in the relationship fail to recognize that. They are almost oblivious to anything other than themselves in the relationship. They are oblivious to what issues may be effecting them, what a good choice is compared to a bad choice and importantly, when they should back down from the relationship. All of these factors contribute to the strength of the love. For whatever reason, young love gives people the will-power to keep holding onto the relationship despite of things that would usually drag them down. This contributes to the strength aspect. The idea of this theme closely relates to the story of Romeo and Juliet. For example, the fact that Romeo and Juliet are attempting to stay in their young relationship is displaying the strength of young love. The lovers put their own lives on the line for each other, as well as their families lives. The fact that they continued to keep their secretive relationship alive shows strength within itself.

5. The Dangers of Dishonesty                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Honesty is a key value in any relationship or situation and when it is misused or neglected, the consequences can be deadly. When somebody is dishonest problems such as miscommunication, confusion and conflict can arise. The dangers of dishonesty are the possible negative outcomes that dishonesty creates. In Romeo and Juliet, dishonesty lead to both the love between the two, but it also lead to the death of the lovers. If Romeo was honest about where he was going the night after the Montague party, Romeo and Juliet possibly could have never continued the relationship between them. His friends may have talked him out of speaking with the young Capulet girl. At the same time, if Romeo and Juliet hadn’t communicated ever again, both would not have ended their lives in such a tragic way. There are plenty of dangers of dishonestly. Some dangers may be small, but some also may lead to death!

6. Revenge Leads to Destruction                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Revenge is a very strong urge, an urge that some give in to very easily. The idea of revenge makes sense- if somebody did something bad to you, why don’t they deserve to get something bad to them? The problem arises when other factors come into play. The case isn’t often a direct one-on-one conflict that can be evened out with a little pay back. Miscommunication and the people you are dealing with often take a toll on how your “revenge plan” will pan out in the end. Because of these factors that key in, revenge often leads to some kind of case of destruction. This can be seen in the story of Romeo and Juliet. The rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues lead to many brawls which then lead to many deaths. One of these deaths was Romeo’s dear friend Mercutio, killed by Juliet’s Cousin Tybalt. Romeo craved to get revenge on Tybalt for killing his friend, and he succumbed to the craving. Romeo killed Tybalt as his way to get him back. Maybe Romeo’s craving was satisfied, but the consequences that Romeo now had to face made his life very difficult. He had demolished almost all chances he had to see his love again, as he was banished from Verona. This situation very well suits the theme of revenge leads to destruction.

7. Fate Often Controls Lives                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Fate is a touchy subject as some believe in it as others do not. The idea of fate is when an otherworldly being or force directs essentially what happens in your life. People refer meeting certain people as fate, or certain events occurring because it was fate. It basically means it was just supposed to happen, it was maybe even unavoidable. Focusing on this idea, the story of Romeo and Juliet is blamed on fate by some. Some interprete the story where fate has brought the two together, as well as fate drawing their lives apart. This interpretation is what this theme is based off of. Fate is what allowed the lovers to meet at the Montague party and fate is what brought the deaths to both of the feuding families. Some may think of the story based off the idea of fate, whereas others may base their idea purely off of the decisions that brought the lovers to that point.

  1. This post was so intriguing to read! All of your answers are super well-written and descriptive; they nail exactly what the question was asking. The way you wrote your answers make it sound like you wrote this to an audience. That is awesome because, before this blog, I don’t think any of us has had experience writing to an audience. Maybe at the beginning of the post you could have added an introduction? If someone were to read this, they might not know why you wrote this or what the assignment was.
