A9 CC: The Majestic Emotions Representation

  • image image

Introduction-

The Majestic starring Jim Carrey is a wonderful film relating back to the theme- search for self. There is no questioning the fact that the main character, Peter Appleton went on quite the emotional journey throughout the film. As a class assignment, we took specific events from the movie and assigned certain colours to what Peter would be feeling during the events. I used the app Paper Fifty Three to represent the colours and emotions. The app offers any colour imaginable. There are preset colours, as well as colours you can mix on your own. As you can see, my emotions/events have more than one colour assigned.

Each emotion has a colour related to it. Each box (event) has more than one colour in it to capture the emotions during each event. As you can see, the shapes of colour within the boxes are different as well. The bottom right-hand corner of each box is the emotion he feels the deepest, and most internally. It is the emotion that he might not necessarily show on his face. The upper left-hand part of the box is the colour representing the emotion Peter is showing. The one that people would see if they were to see him in the moment of that event. Peter feels More negative/shocking events have jagged and pointy edges. Hurt/angered events have boxed shapes. The ones that are mainly one colour are events where Peter would only feel one emotion very strongly. The rest of the oddball shapes I feel just apply to the event. Also, I refer to the main character as Peter/nameless/Luke depending on what event I am talking about. Now, I will go into detail about what each event is. Enjoy!

Event 1- Peter’s Movie Screening

The first event is a positive and excitement filled situation. Peter’s movie that he wrote and directed is hitting the movie theatres, and this is his first time viewing it! He is watching it with one of the stars of the show, and also his girlfriend at the time. The emotions during this event include- excitement, romance, positivity, and pride. Peter has a very nice outlook on life at this point and knew himself as a successful screenwriter making it big in Hollywood.

Event 2- Communist Accusation

After the show, Peter is informed that he has been accused of being a communist. There was a bit of mystery surrounding who was spreading this lie, possibly an old girlfriend of sorts, but Peter received horrible news. His new film was to be pushed back for a few months, and the credit is to be given to somebody else. Peter felt emotions of- shock, disbelief, confusion, anxiety, and fear. Everything Peter had worked for falls apart during this event.

Event 3- Drinking Away Problems

Apparently the only solution Peter could come up with to deal with this loss was to drink. He headed over to the bar to attempt to push all of his feelings down to his feet by getting drunk. He briefly talks the bartender about his troubles, like his girlfriend leaving him and so on. He decides to then go for a drive up the coast while still intoxicated. At this time, Peter feels emotions like- drunkenness, hopelessness, confusion, sorrow, and fear.

Event 4- Car Accident

On Peter’s drive up the coast, he quickly drives towards a creature on the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it and he rams his car into the side of the bridge he was driving over at that point. It was a very quick event but Peter felt lots of emotions during that time. These emotions include- fright, adrenaline, and fear. Peter’s feelings of sorrow and woe very quickly changed to the opposite. He felt rushes of adrenaline and shock because in that moment he could have lost his life.

Event 5- Plummeting Into Water

Peter’s car is crashed into the side of the bridge. The best option would have been to simply leave the car and get help. He did not do this. Instead, Peter tries to back out of the side of the bridge, making the situation worse. The car starts tipping and rocking. He attempts to leave the vehicle but his coat is stuck in the car door. Before he knows it, he falls into the water with his car. Peter is still struggling to break free while still in the water. He starts to lose strength until everything turns black. Emotions like- fright, adrenaline, anxiety, and fear are what Peter would be feeling.

Event 6- Waking Up

Peter is awakened by the panting of a Golden Retriever directly over top of him. He has no recollection of where he is, what had happened, or even who he was. All he was was a nameless man, laying on the beach. An older man, the owner of the dog, notices him and runs over to see if he is alright. He insists on bringing him to the doc, to see what condition he is in and tend to his wounds. Peter would be feeling very few emotions at this point. He would feel confused and a little bit surprised.

Event 7- Introduction to Lawson

The unnamed man and the dog owner walk through the town of Lawson California. This where he had laid on the beach, just directly out of town. As they walk through, Stan the dog owner explains that this town had lost many boys to the war. This had taken a toll on the town, making it not the same cheerful place it had always been. Stan kept insisting that the man without his identity looks extremely familiar. They quickly headed over to the cafe, where Peter got a bite to eat and even more people told him he looked eerily familiar. They then headed over to the doctors office. During this time, he still had limited emotions like cluelessness and feeling overwhelmed.

Event 8- Suprise at the Doctor’s

At the Doctor’s, the man gets his wounds tended to, and is also told that he just have some form of amnesia. They briefly talk even more about his familiarity, until another older man enters the room. This man by the name of Harry Trimble exclaimed that this man is his son he thought he had lost in the war. The nameless man now takes on the title of Luke Trimble, a boy they thought they thought went MIA in the war, but ended up back in town. During this point, Luke would feel bewildered, clueless, a little bit safer, alarmed, and uneasy.

Event 9- Taken Home

Luke is taken to what he now calls home, his newly found father Harry’s house. When he gets home,he takes a very long nap. He wakes up to meet the workers of the Majestic Movie Theatre that he is soon to be introduced . Harry shows Luke the old, rundown and cobweb filled theatre and told tales of how it used to be. He also sadly remarks how nobody was interested in movies anymore, so the building shut down. Luke sees the potential in this building and urges Harry to reopen. Eventually, the rebuilding of The Majestic is underway! Luke is feeling inspired, a little sad, hopeful, and lost during this time

Event 10- Bob

At the cafe, Luke runs into a Lawson town member named Bob. Bob introduced himself to Luke but seemed very reluctant to. Even later, Bob confronts Luke about how he is in no way who he claims to be. He insists that this man is just an imposter. During these interactions with Bob, Luke would be feeling many emotions like- confusion, feeling hurt and maybe even a bit attacked by Bob.

Event 11- Adele

Luke is reintroduced to his former girlfriend, Adele. She asks Luke if he had any recollection of who she was, and sadly he did not. Adele and Luke go for a walk around town and talk about various things about the past. During this walk, Luke slowly feels himself falling for this young lady. These are the some of the first strong, positive emotions Luke had been feeling since he woke up on the beach. Emotions like- romance, happiness, excitement and a little bit of nervousness.

Event 12-  The Majestic

The grand re-opening of The Majestic is today! All of the hard work that the town members, the workers, and others had put in really paid off. The Majestic was no longer dusty and damaged. The entrance was coated in shimmering lights. Velvet ropes and carpets played the role of the interior design.  Luke was working in the ticket booth before the show, watching the movie-goers file in. This is a very happy time for the town of Lawson. Luke would be feeling- excited, nervous and also prideful.

Event 13- Memory Gain

The movie Sand Pirates of the Sahara is all running very smoothly. People seem to be enjoying the film, and the atmosphere of the movie theatre. Suddenly, Luke notices something very strange while watching the movie himself. At certain points in the movie, Luke knew every single word the script. Like a punch in the gut, everything came back to Luke, who now knows himself as Peter.

Event 14- Reel Change

  1. Hey there Bella,
I have to say it’s so cool what you’re able to do to make this blog your own, and specifically how you’re setting up the format of this post is different from anyone else doing the activity.
Some real positives I can see in this are:
    – that you’re writing with a Writer’s Voice already and speaking directly to an audience, in 2nd person point of view by using “you”.
    – a great, well-explained introduction for your reader to your task, what led up to it, and what the goal was in starting the project.
    – the consistency of your formatting. For each of your separate sections, you’ve got a) event, b) bolded title, c) your mini pic of the colour/representation to match it and d) your full explanation. That’s quite a set up! Very polished!

One wish for you – remember that larger texts are underlined when the title is cited. The movie title should be underlined (or given in italics but never both at the same time).
Also, I’ve had some great and prompt exchanges with the folks behind your app that you used. You should tweet to them your final image and a link to the blog post you’re writing that explains what the image represents. Their Twitter handle is @paperfiftythree

You lost some work here, too. I heard back within fifteen minutes from the @edublogs people, specifically @suewaters replied. She’s very sorry the work was lost, suggests being pretty diligent about clicking “Save draft” as you continue on, and though it will be quite disappointing you can look at it as another of the learning experiences that come with using #technology. I love how developed this blog post is! You’ve added so much more to it than was originally assigned, so all I need from you are exactly 13 events explained and that’s what you’ve got here.

Congrats on continuing to push your limits in what you can do with this blog!!

  2. Bella, I love this! I like that you go into so much detail and explanation! I also like that you have used a set of different colours to represent the scenes instead of just one. It adds to the explanation. I realize that it’s not finished but it still is really good.

  3. Even though you ain’t done yet it looks wonderful and well put together and you put more than one color together that just makes it even better keep it up!

  4. Love this! I’m adding it to my teacher tool box as an option for student book reports.

    1. Hello!
Thank you so much! This was a super fun project to do, and I appreciate you checking it out!
